Full usage (total use) of agricultural biomass, including waste and side streams, is mandatory in order to achieve circular agronomic systems. To achieve this, the starch processing industry needs a more balanced and diverse portfolio of products; food as well as new non-food products are needed to increase its overall economic viability. The objective of this project is to develop high performance biobased polymers, based upon isoidide; a building block that can be derived from residual starch. The project builds upon previously generated fundamental knowledge by Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) and WFBR on both the catalytic production of isoidide and the thermal properties of high molecular weight biobased polyesters. In the project more diverse polymers will be explored and scientific insights on mechanical, gas barrier and film forming properties of the polymers will be obtained. The application potential for demanding applications like (food) packaging, electronics, automotive, materials as well as in packaging coatings will be explored. Potential market volume of the technology to be developed is at least a couple of hundred thousands of tonnes.
