Samenvatting van het project
Feed4Foodure is a research and innovation program targeted at sustainable animal nutrition, circular agri-food systems, robust livestock and resource use efficiency. Sustainable animal nutrition in circular agri-food systems is the focus for 2021-2024.
Sustainable animal nutrition is a source-oriented research and innovation track to reduce “leakage” of nutrients from the agri-food system to the environment. “Low excretion and circular diets” will result in reduced excretion of nitrogen, phosphorus and other elements in feces and urine and will reduce nutrient losses along the full nutrient cycle feed-animal-barn-manure-soil-crops. An additional challenge is to develop such low emission feed innovations without introducing adverse effects on for example animal wellbeing or climate. The Feed4Foodure partners are highly motivated to develop such integrated approaches: “Feeds of the future” for circular agri-food concepts of the future. This sustainability transition will include a shift in the type of feed materials. Circular agri-food systems will use more feeds that have been produced on-farm locally or regionally, like (biodiverse) grass and fodder crops, in combination with co-products, residues and other human inedible biomass as feed materials. Primary raw materials, which can be used directly for human food products, will decrease significantly in future circular feed concepts. This necessitates new integrated concepts for the cascading and valorisation of co-products and residues. Feed applications need to be optimised across species, and need to be combined with food and non-food applications to be able to fully use the available biomass in the most sustainable way, and with highest added value.
