Exploitation of the onion genome to develop breeding tools for resistance against three pathogenic fungi
The goal of the project is to exploit the recently sequenced onion-genome to develop tools for disease resistance breeding for organic and conventional farming systems. We will compare resistance gene sequences in onion with those of two related Allium species, through bio-informatic analyses of the available onion genome and generation of new sequence data from resistance gene amplicons. In addition, we will perform transcript analyses of infected onion plants and interspecific hybrids to get insight in resistance mechanisms.
