MEDALE (Medicine Degradation by Adaptive Laboratory Evolution)
Useful molecules such as PFAS, hormones and organic solvents end up in surface waters at the end of their service life. Some of these hardly biodegrade and therefore accumulate in the environment. This project aims to relieve nature from this burden by leveraging the power of the global microbiome in combination with adaptive laboratory evolution. This results in production of naturally adapted bacteria that are able to degrade persistent compounds in dedicated membrane-bioreactors.
