Samenvatting

Disinfection and decontamination of product and waste streams, and microbiology-safe cleaning of equipment, is essential for various industries, including the agri-food business, water treatment and detergent industry. In practice this often can be realized by using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which is one of the cleanest, antimicrobial and environmentally friendly oxidants. H2O2 can be an excellent alternative for the use of chlorine and other toxic-chemicals and is also a feedstock for making stronger oxidants such as peracetic acid or hydroxyl radicals via advanced oxidation processes.
Decentralizing H2O2 production, by direct onsite electrochemical synthesis of H2O2 from air, water and electricity, has several advantages relative to the established method for its industrial production:
1. customized decentralized production which prevents transportation and limits storage of hazardous material and explosive material at the end user, 2. tuning the product concentration to the target value for each specific application, 3. preventing the use of large amounts of organic solvents, and 4. preventing the use of (contaminating) stabilizers, which are currently added to limit the decomposition of concentrated H2O2.
In this project a disruptive water treatment solution will be developed which satisfies the need for on-site, on-demand, safe, sustainable and cost-effective generation of the green oxidant hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Therefore, a modular H2O2 generator device will be developed and demonstrated for on-site H2O2 production and application, based on WUR’s patented Peroxsitetm technology. The produced salt-free hydrogen oxide can be applied as cleaning and disinfection agent for water treatment and agri-food markets, as oxidizer in the chemical industries, and as bleaching agent in food, pulp and paper and textile industries.
