Samenvatting

The aim is to lower N-excretion from pig production facilities by developing new concepts for improved precision feeding of pigs. By applying these concepts nitrogen (ammonia) losses via faeces, urine, losses of energy as heat and emission of CO2 will be reduced and animal health will be supported. This approach contributes to the further development and implementation of precision farming concepts and to the economic results in the pig production sector by increasing feed and nutrient efficiency.

Doel van het project

The project will gain new knowledge on the effects of variation in animal and environmental conditions on protein and amino acid requirements in growing-finishing pigs and on how this information should be used in the practical feeding of pigs housed in a pen. The partners involved will learn to use information on the genetic capacity of animal, on the environmental/climate conditions in which the pigs are housed at pen level, and on their actual (real time) growth response to ingestion of feed for the further optimization of diet composition in terms of dietary protein and amino acid concentrations and for instantly modifying diet composition and supply to pigs throughout the course of the production phase. The innovative concepts in relation to precision feeding and nutrition contribute to further developing precision farming systems, with greater care for animals in terms of health and the environment.

The animal feed sector and its suppliers will implement the results of the project by further optimizing ingredient and nutrient composition of diets for pigs and presenting new precision feeding concepts, considering not only the animal’s productive capacity and performance, and environmental emissions but also considering animal health. Implementing new dietary strategies considering environmental sustainability, animal health and welfare is of high benefit for the primary pig production sector and its stakeholders and for the public image and attitude of society towards pig production.

The project liaises to the mission of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Food with regard to increasing environmental sustainability of pig production as the focus in the project is on the evaluation of low protein, amino acid supplemented diets with lower environmental impact in terms of N- and ammonia emission supporting the route towards climate neutral production systems (Mission Part B. Climate neutral agriculture and feed production).

The project contributes to increasing environmental sustainability of pig production as the focus in the project is on the evaluation of low protein, amino acid supplemented diets and new precision feeding concepts with lower environmental impact in terms of N- and ammonia emission. It thereby supports the way towards climate neutral animal production systems (Mission Part B. Climate neutral agriculture and feed production).
