Seaweed to slow down the aging of the vasculature: a nutritious approach to battle dementia and vascular aging
In this project we will provide proof-of-principle that seaweeds that are eligible for sustainable agriculture can be used to produce healthy and safe food and are a source of molecules to protect against dysfunction of blood vessels and against dementia caused by aging. To do so, we will study the effect of seaweed--contained food on vascular aging and dementia. In addition, we will study effects, compare lipophilic molecules in seaweed species and test their effect on nuclear receptors, which have been implicated in protection against aging, vascular dysfunction and dementia. With these studies we hope to strengthen our portfolio and supplement that of Topsector, and thus increase the chances to set up a viable industry to produce novel health care products based on sustainable seaweed agriculture in the Netherlands.
