Samenvatting project
The transition towards a circular and biobased economy asks for alternatives for fossil based materials that can be shaped in two or even three dimensions (3D) such as plastic packaging, construction materials and furniture. In this project we will develop lignocellulose based materials that will provide these alternatives. For these materials, whole lignocellulosic feedstocks are used without prior fractionation and without adding glues or chemicals. Because of the growing demand for wood and to prevent the use of arable land for non-food purposes, we will use lignocellulose waste and side streams clearly fitting in the primary MMIP ‘Re-use of side and waste streams’.
Our prime starting point in this research is the existing know how of WFBR to produce so-called binderless boards from coconut husk, a technology developed in the early 2000’s. These boards have high strength and good water barrier properties. For further innovation of this technology and expanding it to other lignocellulosic feedstocks, mechanistic understanding of the underlying process is required, first and foremost to be able to relate process parameters to desired and tunable board properties.
The most important goal for this project, therefore, is to better understand the reaction mechanism(s), e.g. the behavior of lignin present in the matrix and how to use this lignin as a natural binder under the influence of pressure, heat and water. Based on these mechanistic insights the basic binderless technology will be further developed on three points: The process will be adapted to be suited for other locally available lignocellulose side streams (new feedstocks), the technology will be optimized to be able to produce thin walled and 3D products (new applications) and the technology will be fine-tuned to decrease investment and processing costs (new technology).

Doel van het project
Because of the growing demand for wood and to prevent the use of arable land for non-food purposes we will use locally sourced lignocellulose waste and side streams fitting in the primary MMIP Reuse of organic side and waste streams. These side streams do not always have an added value outlet yet and we expect that this technology could offer new opportunities to use these waste and side streams in real added value sustainable products for the construction and packing industries as well as for consumer products. This will lead to the development of new value chains for the consortium partners, starting with locally sourced waste and side lignocellulosic streams, and additional stakeholders.

Relatie met missie/motivatie
Lignocellulosic waste and side streams exhibit large potential to be used for sustainable high quality products for construction or packaging purposes. Turning these side streams into durable products with a long lifetime allows storing biogenic carbon for a long time in a product. Not only re-use of waste and side streams give rise to the total use of the biomass, resulting in net zero waste, also the environmental benefits should be taken into account when mitigation of carbon is envisaged in the form of (long term) storage of carbon in durable materials. Both aspects are really necessary and support strongly this MMIP. Furthermore in this project partners along the value chain are involved to set up new value chains.

Geplande resultaten
The intended results of the Development of the Sustainable Binderless Product Technology project will be achieved, and executed in three work packages (WP) over three years.
Workpackage 1: Elucidation of the reaction mechanism(s)
Workpackage 2: Development of binderless products, process optimization and related new value chains with coconut husk and other lignocellulosic waste and side streams (together with project partners) and optimize the process parameters
Workpackage 3: Program management and dissemination. Each year at least 2 consortium meetings will be organised. In smaller committees email exchanges and online meetings will be organised.
